When a shower curtain doesn’t fit right, you notice. It might bunch awkwardly, leave a gap at the bottom, or worse—let water sneak out onto your bathroom floor. The solution? Knowing what size you actually need before you buy.
Standard Sizes—and a Few More
Not every shower uses the same size curtain. These are the most common options:
- 72" W x 72" L – This is the standard for most tub-shower combos.
- 36" W x 72" L – A narrower option made for stall showers.
- 72" W x 84" L – For taller setups with higher rods or ceilings.
- 72" W x 96" L – Ideal if your rod is mounted near the ceiling or your tub is unusually deep.
What these sizes have in common: they’re designed to hang just inside the tub or shower edge—long enough to keep water in, without dragging on the floor.

How to Measure Your Shower Space
Before buying, grab a tape measure and check two things:
1. Width of the Shower Area
Measure straight across from wall to wall (or edge to edge of the shower). Add 12 inches to that number to account for curtain folds—this helps it drape neatly when closed.
Example: A 60" wide tub needs a curtain that's about 72" wide.
2. Height From Curtain Rod to Floor
Measure from your curtain rod down to the floor or tub edge. You want the curtain to fall about 1–2 inches below the tub edge (or just above the floor for walk-in showers) to prevent water from escaping.
Which Curtain Size Fits Your Shower?
- Bathtub with standard rod height: Go for 72" x 72"
- Small standing shower/stall: Choose 36" x 72"
- Tall ceilings or mounted curtain rods: Try 72" x 84" or 72" x 96"
- Custom or curved rods: Measure the arc and adjust width accordingly
If you’re between sizes, it’s usually better to go wider and slightly longer—you can always hem or let it drape more.

Curtain Tips That Make a Difference
- Use a liner: A separate waterproof liner keeps the fabric curtain clean and extends its life.
- Choose the right hooks or rings: Make sure they match the number of grommets in your curtain and glide easily on your rod.
- Consider material: Polyester is common and water-resistant; cotton looks soft but needs a liner.
Measuring your space might take an extra minute, but it makes a big difference in how your bathroom looks and feels every day. The right size curtain keeps things dry, tidy, and easy to use.
