Why Does Your Floor Still Get Wet Even With a Shower Door

Why Does Your Floor Still Get Wet Even With a Shower Door

You’ve got the glass, the enclosure, and everything appears to fit — so why does the bathroom floor still get wet after every shower?

In most cases, the issue comes down to one small but important detail: the shower door seals.

The Real Purpose of Side and Bottom Seals

If you look closely at your glass shower door, you’ll find clear plastic strips along the edges. These are the side and bottom seals — and they’re not just there for aesthetics.

The side seal runs vertically where the glass door meets a fixed panel or wall. It prevents water from leaking through the narrow space at the edge of the door when it’s closed.

The bottom seal, also called a sweep, fits along the underside of the door. It’s designed to block water from escaping through the small gap between the door and the shower threshold.

When either seal is damaged, missing, or improperly fitted, water starts to escape. You may not notice it right away — until you step out onto a wet floor or feel that bath mat slowly soaking through.

What Happens When Seals Wear Out?

Over time, plastic seals can:

  • Stiffen and crack
  • Shift out of place
  • Shrink and leave gaps
  • Collect buildup or mildew

Even a 2mm gap at the edge of the door is enough for water to start dripping out during every shower. It’s one of the most common reasons people see puddles even with a frameless or semi-frameless setup.

A Small Fix With a Clear Result

The good news: replacing your door seal is simple. No drill. No plumber. Most seals are designed to slide off by hand and push right back on. Just make sure to match the seal to the thickness of your glass, and cut it to length with scissors if needed.

Keep the Water In — Without Rethinking Your Entire Bathroom

You don’t need a new shower. You don’t need to recaulk the floor. If water’s escaping through the edges, the seal is usually the issue — and the fix takes less time than your next shower.
